Meet Our Professional Basketball Coach: Titus Channer!

Titus Channer played at McMaster University, where he made his mark as the school's all-time leading scorer. In 2002, Titus became a member of the Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team, as a star point guard and won a silver medal in the 2002 World Championships.

Channer’s involvement with teaching began 20 years ago, during which he has run camps, clinics, and workshops throughout both Canada and Europe. His main focus is on basic skill development for all ages, and improving the entire athlete. He believes fundamental training teaches youth how to improve their game both mentally and physically through a variety of basketball concepts.

It is one thing to be able to write a computer program to solve a problem, but it is another thing entirely to write code that works efficiently to solve real challenges. This is especially true with robotics, where things happen in real time. In this course students will learn tricks and test examples of how different programs can be written, and why certain problems are easier for robots to do than others. They will get to put the theories into practice by building programming different aspects of a robot that can solve a rubrics cube puzzle. Students will also build a take home robot arm that can solve various puzzles, but only the most efficient programs will gain the most points. In this students will be challenged to think critically about the most efficient way to complete each task.

Whether it is self-driving cars, or a robot that vacuums your house, efficient navigation in the real world is one of the most challenging problems that robots face. Students will learn about a variety of sensors, and test each one to navigate through a maze in the shortest amount of time. By experimenting with each type of sensor, they will understand the strengths and weaknesses in a variety of real life situations. They will also come away with a core understanding of what algorithms work best with different types of sensors, and how to combine multiple sensors to create more complex behaviors. As a final challenge, students will choose for themselves what sensor or combination of sensors will be best suited for the task, and put it to the test.

As an optional take home project for the course, students can go more in depth into the electronic wiring of sensors. Students will build a navigation platform similar to that of modern day robot vacuums, and build the electronic control board themselves to complete the maze.

Our Staff-in-Training program is designed specifically for adolescents who are ready for the challenge of leadership development and possess the maturity necessary to contribute to and benefit from the program.

Adolescents who have completed grades 8 or 9 have the opportunity to register in our Staff-in-Training program. This leadership training program involves ongoing supervision, evaluation and leadership training sessions and skill development workshops under the direction of our SIT Coordinator. The workshop sessions will focus on topics such as risk management, supervision, communication, teamwork, health and safety, programming, conflict management and bullying. SITs will spend the majority of their day assisting camp counsellors or specialists, thus allowing them the opportunity for hands on experience and training. As young leaders, SITs will learn and develop skills that will be useful all their lives.
