In this course, students will take on the role of an aerospace engineer. Students will design and create a number of advanced flying machines, and face off in fun challenges that will put their creations to the ultimate test. Through interactive lessons and their own first-hand experience, students will learn about the properties of air, the forces of flight, airfoils, aerodynamic efficiency, and flight stability. They will be amazed by the advanced projects they can complete and customize. Students can continue to experiment with their creations at home by keeping six of the projects they will build. In Level 2, we focus on developing a deeper understanding of the concepts of reflection, forces, and simple machines, as well as exploring concepts of electricity and energy flow through hands-on activities. Collaboratively, campers will redesign classic arcade games, such as pinball machines, and will combine scientific and engineering principals with marketing and entrepreneurial skills as they take on the role of game designers. Using their creativity and critical thinking skills, they will even get a chance to invent their own unique arcade game, and will market it to the class. Further, campers will be introduced to the design thinking process and will become skilled at using the process to solve a multitude of challenges.

A Song Of My Own is a songwriting and recording workshop for kids of all experiential backgrounds; musical beginners are absolutely welcome!

Pulling from her own background as a licensed songwriter, recording artist and producer, instructor Robyn Dell'Unto supports campers through a journey of songwriting from the humble beginnings of a concept to song completion, recording, production and online presentation. Through this journey, campers gain confidence in their ability to devise themes and create their own story. Your camper will explore the building blocks that make up a popular song and gather tools to combat writers block, de-code popular rhyme schemes, and navigate hooks. Campers will also gain hands-on experience recording instruments into a professional condenser microphone, operating recording equipment and editing audio through Logic X.

Meet Robyn Dell’Unto Our Song Writing Specialist:

Robyn Dell’Unto is a songwriter, producer and founder of A Song Of My Own songwriting workshops for kids. Since the release of her debut album ‘I’m Here Every Night’ (Orange Lounge/Universal, 2O1O) Dell’Unto has garnered placements in over 35 TV episodes and films, including CBC’s Being Erica, MuchMusic's Degrassi: The Next Generation, Disney’s Harriet The Spy, CTV's The Listener, and a 2015 Zara national campaign. With her most recent single ‘Sidecar’ still in heavy rotation on CBC Radio 2 national programs, Dell’Unto received a nomination for ‘Best Emerging Artist’ at the 2O14 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Dell’Unto also writes and produces for other artists, with credits on new or upcoming releases by Jadea Kelly, Darrelle London, Amanda Rheume and new Universal Music signing K.I.D.

Each camper will be educated on the benefits of teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and confidence. Our weekly program is led by highly trained athletes and coaches that are committed to the personal development and character building of every unique participant. Discovery Day Camp is pleased to welcome professional and Canadian National Team Player Titus Channer this summer to our team! Lessons are aimed to build skill level by progressing the campers through fundamental basketball techniques. These techniques include: dynamic stretching, explosive movement, shooting mechanics, passing techniques, offensive and defensive concepts, and team concepts.

No matter your athletic ability or knowledge of the game, we invite all campers out onto our court!!!

Meet Our Professional Basketball Coach: Titus Channer!

Titus Channer played at McMaster University, where he made his mark as the school's all-time leading scorer. In 2002, Titus became a member of the Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team, as a star point guard and won a silver medal in the 2002 World Championships.

Channer’s involvement with teaching began 20 years ago, during which he has run camps, clinics, and workshops throughout both Canada and Europe. His main focus is on basic skill development for all ages, and improving the entire athlete. He believes fundamental training teaches youth how to improve their game both mentally and physically through a variety of basketball concepts.

In Level 2, we investigate the forces of flight and the principals of aerodynamics. Through this understanding campers will implement various design elements to help their creations move faster and fly better, and will explain how various forces (drag, lift, gravity, etc.) impact things in motion. They will make connections to real world problems through an understanding of how design is used to affect how things move. Campers will explore the environmental issues around traditional means of travel and will be challenged to propose alternative, eco-friendly options. Further, campers will be introduced to the design thinking process and will become skilled at using the process to solve a multitude of challenges.

The best way to teach children good money habits is by giving them their own money to experience. Through active participation in a fun and simplified financial game, your children will experience “real-life” and relevant money situations. They will “earn” their own income, budget between needs and wants, pay income taxes, give back to the community, build assets, make passive income, and be introduced to the importance of Pay Yourself First! It’s not a board game – no board, no dice to roll – but your child actively learning, participating, and having fun. Our students rate this financial game off the FUN chart!! Investigating mechanical systems through real life applications

The calculations that are behind the mechanical systems that make robots work are very important for designers. Understanding ideal and actual mechanical advantage, identifying the inputs and outputs on a system, calculating pressure, area and force in pneumatic systems, as well as the main sources of loss are critical to the system design. Students will analyse various advanced geometries of motion to make their robots grab tightly enough but not too tight and lift heavy objects with enough speed. They will also design their robot to walk with legs at just the right stride, length and speed as well as what design considerations must be used to achieve different emotions. At the end of the course students will use their knowledge of kinematic systems to help them design and launch a rocket as well as to build their very own robot that will require them to program each different movement and put them together to get the robot to walk! Book this exciting kinematics lesson today!

Understanding mechanisms for transmitting power in vehicles, toys, and other robots

Just like our bodies have muscles and bones to let us move and play, robots need mechanisms to make them move around and do all the fun things that robots like to do! In this course students will learn about gears, pulleys, belt drives, cams, levers, and linkages. Every robot they build will use one or more of these mechanisms. Through their investigations, students will understand the trade-offs associated with each type of system. At the end of every lesson, students will be given a unique challenge where their creativity and knowledge must be combined in an exciting face-off with their peers. Join us and master the skill of mechanical robotic design!

Ahoy there PlayLab Adventurers! All aboard!

In Level 2, we focus on problem solving and innovation while we work together to design devices such as systems to retrieve sunken treasures. Using magnetic principals, campers will have a chance to understand and create compasses. Campers will also enjoy roleplaying in a pirate play, honing their cartography skills by creating a map of their buried treasure, and exploring concepts of naval engineering by building a sailboat. Further, campers will be introduced to the design thinking process and will become skilled at using the process to solve a multitude of challenges.
