Summer Camp (8 - 12 YRS)

Students will be introduced to the forces of flight and aerodynamic design through applications in a variety of real flying devices. These include air powered rockets that soar out of sight as well as a Frisbee, kite glider and more! They will then be challenged to design and build a complex aircraft using all the principles they have learned. At the end of the course, students get a wind powered vehicle to take home and continue the experimentation! Come be a flight engineer today!

A work of Art you can eat! Children will have the opportunity to express their creativity through the medium of food. Campers will be introduced to the many tastes of our world and will explore nutritional options for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle. This class will help to improve self confidence and teamwork skills while equipping campers with the basics of meal preparation. Discovery Day Camp’s ESL program caters to international children and youth, ages 8 through 12 who wish to learn and develop efficiency in the English language. The aim of the ESL Discovery Day Camp is to provide a fun, meaningful and educational environment for students to develop proficiency with the English language and the confidence to apply their knowledge outside the classroom. The ESL program offers small student to teacher ratios in order to maximize engagement and provide ample individual attention and tutoring for each student. Students will participate in active learning environments where they will have the opportunity to develop reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, phonics and conversation skills. Prior to commencing the program, students will be assessed on their knowledge and application of the English language in order to create a personalized and appropriate curriculum program for their individual needs. Classes are 3 hours in duration and include a variety of teaching methods and activities including comprehensive worksheets, educational games, interactive reading, dialogue and interview scenarios, computer applications, collaborative group work and much more.

Campers selecting the ESL Program are required to select an additional focus group activity.

In Level 2, we investigate the forces of flight and the principals of aerodynamics. Through this understanding campers will implement various design elements to help their creations move faster and fly better, and will explain how various forces (drag, lift, gravity, etc.) impact things in motion. They will make connections to real world problems through an understanding of how design is used to affect how things move. Campers will explore the environmental issues around traditional means of travel and will be challenged to propose alternative, eco-friendly options. Further, campers will be introduced to the design thinking process and will become skilled at using the process to solve a multitude of challenges.

The best way to teach children good money habits is by giving them their own money to experience. Through active participation in a fun and simplified financial game, your children will experience “real-life” and relevant money situations. They will “earn” their own income, budget between needs and wants, pay income taxes, give back to the community, build assets, make passive income, and be introduced to the importance of Pay Yourself First! Reel Film Experience puts you live on location in the director’s chair all week! Under the direct supervision of a Director’s Cut (DC) filmmaker you and your crew will create a concept, write a script, scout shot locations, learn multi angle filming techniques (free-hand and tripod), act in the film, edit the film on the newest Mac books, add voices, sound effects, music and titles.

Become a jungle researcher as we venture deep into the jungle!

Campers will work together to create a jungle airdrop system, design a specialized “leaping lizard” and build a giant jungle food web. Campers will use creative design to invent their own species of jungle creature, and will be introduced to simple concepts of adaptation to an environment through camouflage and predator defences. Further, campers will be introduced to the design thinking process and will learn how to use the process to solve all the challenges that are presented to them.

Refine your technique or learn new ones. Our practicing artist will be your guide as you develop your skills in painting, drawing and sketching. Learn to make paint from natural sources found on our property as you derive inspiration from the beauty of our natural surroundings. All skill levels are welcome.

Our Junior Medics Ages 8-12 will take the first step in their medical journey as they become doctors for a week in this science-based camp. Junior medics will meet Skully our Medics Camp skeleton as they learn the bones in the human body. They will explore the circulatory system with a real heart, test their handwashing skills, use real medical equipment to take vital signs, apply splints, slings and casts to their patients, follow food through the digestive system, perform CPR on a manikin and learn basic first aid skills. 

Learning the engineering design process as a NASA engineer

Meet Dash, the next Olympic athlete! Using a quick-to-learn graphical language, help Dash complete feats of strength and speed. How did a lovable robot like Dash make it all the way to the Olympic games? Create a story using sequences of Dash's rise to fame. Use functions (an important tool in coding) to turn Dash into a Soccer and Basketball player. Compete against classmates in long jumps and 100 centimeter sprints. Design and build top performing robots by optimizing efficiency!

Energy can be stored to be used when and where we need it. This is especially important for robots that are on the move. They require on-board energy source to power its motors and on-board computers. Robots can also make use of stored energy and springs to preform various functions, and to walk and stay balanced. But every time we convert energy from one form to another, energy is lost. How much is lost? That is when we need to look at how efficient our robots and machines can be. Are there ways we can even recapture energy from the environment to increase run times? In this course students will build a number of devices and robots that make use of energy conversion. Investigating mechanical systems through real life applications

The calculations that are behind the mechanical systems that make robots work are very important for designers. Understanding ideal and actual mechanical advantage, identifying the inputs and outputs on a system, calculating pressure, area and force in pneumatic systems, as well as the main sources of loss are critical to the system design. Students will analyse various advanced geometries of motion to make their robots grab tightly enough but not too tight and lift heavy objects with enough speed. They will also design their robot to walk with legs at just the right stride, length and speed as well as what design considerations must be used to achieve different emotions. At the end of the course students will use their knowledge of kinematic systems to help them design and launch a rocket as well as to build their very own robot that will require them to program each different movement and put them together to get the robot to walk! Understanding mechanisms for transmitting power in vehicles, toys, and other robots

Just like our bodies have muscles and bones to let us move and play, robots need mechanisms to make them move around and do all the fun things that robots like to do! In this course students will learn about gears, pulleys, belt drives, cams, levers, and linkages. Every robot they build will use one or more of these mechanisms. Through their investigations, students will understand the trade-offs associated with each type of system. At the end of every lesson, students will be given a unique challenge where their creativity and knowledge must be combined in an exciting face-off with their peers. In this program students practice entrepreneurship skills through coding and designing the ``Rock-Scissor-Paper'' game. Students are also exposed to the world of Artificial Intelligence by using it to make the game smart as it goes! How? Join this camp to figure it out!
