Curatorial Rationale

If technology is the rational means of progress in human society, then art is a sensual means of  stimulating people to think and feel in order to become a better us. For each individual, art is a  mirror through which we look at ourselves and solve problems. Through the visual creations, we  can see something ineffable within and the essence of ourselves. This body of work — “Time  and Space” visualizes my perception and internal thoughts when facing the passage of time.

This series of work focuses on the process of time and deconstruction within the material layers of my human condition. Through this process, I am able to examine my experience in time and the history of time itself. For me, the noun “time” is ambiguous. Time measures the passage of  matter through space and constantly leaves traces.

In my exploration of time and space, I am constantly looking for connections between the image  of me in the past and the present. Time has influenced my self-perception of myself, therefore I  see myself from different perspectives. In a more exploratory way, I investigate and reflect in my  work, on the effects of time in this space on human society. Humans often unconsciously place more emphasis on the results that time brings us, than on the processes that time drives.  I amplify my perception of the passage of time by using the characteristics of different materials, for  instance: acrylic paintings, ink drawing, multi-medium sculptures, and performance art. In my most recent work, I attempt to connect space and time. Within my work, time documents my emotional growth, which allows me to learn and connect with human society.

This body of work involves a process of discovery and a new perspective of viewing my current  situation. This is the reason why I use different media with significant textures within my work. Understanding the history of time and making a new connection allows me to feel whole and fearlessly face uncertainties surrounding me. My new-found wholes offer me a sense of control over my reality, and I attempt to convey this subjective perception for the viewers.

Furthermore, this body of works is also an expression of my attitude towards the issue of  aesthetics. There are way too many examples of beautiful subject matter in our daily life, yet being immersed in a utopia of good things can make people numb and lose the ability to reflect. Through the  aesthetic of ugliness in some of my sculpture and drawing pieces, I attempt to create resonance with the viewer, to stimulate and advance their self-reflections with the artworks.

The viewer will begin by seeing “My Relationship With Time”, which represents the relevance of time and me as an artist. The environment for these photographs shows the importance of space in our perception of time. This work suggests to the viewer that this body of works is all about how the artist explores time and space in a subjective way. The viewer might feel uncomfortable as they move on to the second and the third artwork since they will notice the aesthetic of ugliness as the key consistency. Colour contrast presented by “SPACE 1” moves this body of works beyond the plain aesthetic of ugliness. The last artwork — “SPACE 2” has a similar composition with “SPACE 1” creating a consistent, yet distilled colour tone to it’s companion piece of “SPACE 1”.

The artworks are displayed in a particular order to allow the viewers participation in the world called “Time and Space”, a physical embodiment of my perception. The viewers experience this subjective, ambiguous feeling by the visual impact of distinct media and the aesthetic of ugliness. Thus, this combination of both stimulates the viewers to reflect on their own personal experiences, asking themselves — “What does the passage of time bring to the individual and what does time take away?  What memories are left in time…”

My Relationship with Time

Sept.2020

Performance & Photography

Digital Print

As a person living in a modern age, I am forced to adapt to a fast-paced life that carries too  much change in too little time. This evidence of passage of time wrapped up and spreading over me makes me feel uncomfortable, so I merged myself with these things that filled me with fear. As for me, I am blindfolded in the natural environment which has no information about time and rely only on my perception to experience the traces left by time.

Drowning

Jul.2020

Multi-medium Sculpture

41cm x 43cm x 33cm

This sculpture piece expresses my understanding of transformation from childhood to  adulthood. The black paint spreads upwards and leaking out from the doll’s body is the  representation of disappearing childhood. The visual message is telling viewers — the doll placed in front of the trash can is a childhood that is being gradually forgotten and devoured.

Perception

Sept.2020

Ink on Paper

41cm x 51cm

I omitted the visual expression of "time" and focused more on high-lighting the emotional and tactile feelings that the passage of time gives me. The relationship between the passive and active aspects between the body and the snakes is abstract. This visual paradox creates a sense of growth and destruction happening simultaneously.

Performance

14minutes 47seconds

This performance piece amplifies the perception of time. In Zeno's "Paradox of the Arrow," the  argument is that time is made up of "now," which means that everything is an indivisible  instant. In this video, "instants" can be interpreted as each beat of the second hand and the ever approaching shot. Therefore, I combine sounds and images to amplify our perception of the passage of time.

Aged

Nov.2020

Multi-medium sculptures

18cm x 15cm x 66cm

35cm x 10cm x 56cm

13cm x 5cm x 63cm

This work is an exploration of the recreations in time. The sculptures are imitating the state of old stuff, fished out of the sea. The sea is a metaphor for life, and common things in life are above the water which are obvious. What lies beneath the surface seems irrelevant, but they are actually playing an important role and supporting our minds.

Space 1

Sept.2019

Multi-medium on Canvas

132cm x 106cm

This is a cool abstract piece inspired by Atsuko Tanaka’s paintings that shows the repetition of different patterns in the chaotic space.  Every single section could have an extension going out of the frame. It expresses my understanding of infinite space.

Space 2

Oct.2020

Multi-medium on Canvas

89cm x 135cm

This abstract painting expresses an expansion of my understanding and space. I always feel like I live in a space full of rules, surrounded by regular shapes and lines. However, like a loophole in a program, this space can sometimes have unexpected violations across this chaotic space.
