Curatorial Rationale

Kabir J.

The theme surrounding my chosen artworks is “the effects of global issues around the world”. For the past few years, the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious effect all around the world. This has been a very serious crisis, but it has also created other global issues such as lack of education, depression, hunger, and many others. Through these artworks, I want to express my feelings and how I overcame these global issues for over two years through art. This is a more effective way for me because I am an introvert and I have a hard time expressing deep feelings especially about depression to new people, therefore through art I can easily express how I feel to the viewer. By presenting the chosen artworks, I hope to deliver a message to the viewer that during the pandemic everyone experienced the same feelings and it has not just been an individual’s experience. In addition to negative memories or moments throughout the pandemic like feeling lonely, we also built a stronger connection with our families.

Before completing each of my pieces, I took inspiration from Contemporary, Pop and Geometric Abstract Art. Throughout these art styles, I had shown how the effect of global issues, specifically COVID-19, depression, lack of education, racism, and hunger had an impact on everyone around the world. The incorporation of human figures was inspired by Keith Haring as it represented different situations of individuals. In order to organize societal issues, incorporation of shapes as Geometric Abstract Art seemed very effective, inspired by Piet Mondrian. This situation can be seen in the painting, “Love of Family”. When referring to “World in Rubbles” and “Unity”, shapes were used to represent meaning, for example the sharp objects like the triangles were negative world impacts hurting people worldwide. Throughout each of these pieces, the taping technique was very effective in making each side and edge straight when painting the shapes using acrylic paint. Whereas, shading had been very effective in “KJ’s World of Joy”.

My goal for this exhibition is for the viewer to connect within my art pieces and not feel lonely due to issues occurring during the pandemic. I want my viewer to leave on a note that, “We are all in this together, and we will get through this together”.

Love of Family

August 2021

Acrylic on Canvas

45.72 cm x 60.96 cm

Love of Family was inspired by Keith Haring and Piet Mondrian. This painting integrates Mondrian’s use of primary colors, straight lines and simplistic shapes. It utilizes Haring’s human figures as well as each component being outlined in the color of black. Each square depicts a moment that occurred throughout the pandemic such as loneliness, unification of family, memories of times before the pandemic and love. The presence of Earth and figures around the piece shows a worldwide effect.

World in Rubbles

October 2021

Acrylic on Canvas

45.72 cm x 60.96 cm

World in Rubbles was inspired by Keith Haring and Kazimir Malevich. This painting incorporates Haring’s use of bold cartoon figures and words to give a direct message. This also includes Malevich’s short range of colors and shapes to create feelings towards global issues around the world. Each corner displays a world issue while each of the shapes work together to depict the issue. The figures at the bottom are good people trying to catch the falling figures being affected by the issues.

KJ’s World of Joy

November 2021

Colored Pencils

35.36 cm x 43.18 cm

KJ’s World of Joy was inspired by Jim Golden and Iz the Wiz. This painting was created using the technique of Jim Golden where a few objects with meaning were organized then a picture was taken. It also utilizes Wiz’s vibrant colors and initials of my name. Each corner shows an object representing my personal identity of what I love to do. Each of these objects had helped me in getting through the COVID-19 pandemic without seeing my friends or cousins face to face.

Unity

February 2022

Acrylic on Canvas

30.48 cm x 40.64 cm

Unity was inspired by Ana Von Laff. This painting utilizes geometric shapes, specifically triangles, a spiral movement, solid color tones and a focal point. The heart represents unity of all people around the world specifically during the pandemic. Each color defines a specific trait and a different human. The overall meaning of this art piece is that together we must help each other through these tough times and spread the message of taking care of one another and bringing the world together.
