Curatorial Rationale

Jussun M.

Throughout my exhibition, I explore the theme of how our experiences affect and enhance interactions. This theme represents how the things we experience on our own build us into the people we are, and how growth improves our interactions with others.

When presenting my artworks within my exhibit, I intend for my audience to see how I progressed throughout my 2 years of DP art. My artworks display great improvement from my first piece all the way to my last. I want the audience to appreciate the pieces that I spent my time on, and try to find the meaning that I wanted to convey within them. I want the audience to first experience and view all the artworks with open ideas and an open mind. However, if they then have any questions I will be glad to have a discussion with them. This gives an open idea on what the audience might have thought the meaning of my artworks was. I may discover that their ideas are far different than my idea, and far different from each other's ideas. This shows the perspective of how different people see different entities in art.

Throughout the process of creating my artworks I learned many different skills and explored different media, thus utilizing a diverse range of techniques. For example, for my art piece titled “Pool Table”, I created a photo joiner of a fragmented view of my pool table. The process for this artwork was a lot different than for my acrylic paintings. This is because different techniques, ideations, and skills are implied in the creation between the two distinct medias.

Even though the processes of creation between the different artworks may differ, I still based all of my artworks on the same theme of how our experiences affect and enhance interactions. Within all of my artworks, some form of this theme is present and each of my creations are analogous to each other. As my artworks range from different messages, each of them still connects to the main theme.

My first piece “Me” inspired by Jim Golden’s collection displays my interests, it represents me and displays an undivided perspective of the things that I like. This relates to the theme because my interests are unique to me, and are a product of the environment that I was raised in. This enhances interactions because everyone’s interests are different which means that if I am discussing my interests with new people that I am meeting, I get to learn about theirs. This creates new relationships based on similarities and differences between our interests.

My other art pieces also display this same message, as they symbolize different things about me or experiences that I went through that helped form my identity. Another example is displayed in “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” and how no matter the tough times that you are going through, you should always try your hardest, and overcome your fears. As I faced this situation multiple times, I learned,  it’s important  to always persevere. This further affected future interactions because if I couldn’t face a fear in the past, I would learn to push through. Then at  my next opportunity, I would simply face that fear.

My exhibit is going to be unique because I am going to display my artworks not in a random order, however they will be displayed in the order of when they were created. This is so that the audience can clearly see my progression as an artist and how my artworks have improved. However, they can also see how the different artworks represent different experiences in my life and how those experiences further enhanced the person I am today. One of the messages is about my culture, and how both my Indian and Canadian cultures helped me develop into the person I am today, while the next artwork  message is about the idea of confusion, and how at that moment I was confused about meaning in my life. I realize the different messages within my exhibition artworks are like walking through and looking at a museum based on me.

Me

October 2020

Graphite and color pencil on paper

27.94 x 27.94 cm

This art piece represents me and displays an undivided perspective on the things that I like. Inspired by Jim Golden I gathered objects that represent different hobbies or things that I appreciate. I then found a way to photograph these objects in a unique way and draw the photographed objects utilizing graphite and color pencil on paper. I did not color all of the objects, however I colored significant objects in the piece that I wanted to emphasize and stand out.

Pool Table

October 2020

Graphite on paper Photography

50.8 x 76.2 cm

This photo joiner displays to the viewers a fragmented reality. This is not actually how the pool table looks, however if it was fragmented and seen in multiple perspectives at once it would look like this. Space adds on to the perspective of this photo joiner because as seen in the fragments, the pool table is being looked at from one side to the other. This creates an element of space, as it seems that one side of the table is closer, the point of view from the human eye.

Acrylic paint on canvas

101.6 x 76.2 cm

After analyzing KAWS and Leonardo Da Vinci's work, I created my artwork inspired by theirs. The visible hands, and the one less visible hand was an inspiration from Leonardo Da Vinci's "Study of Hands". These hands represent the controversial question asked about the Mona Lisa, "What is her emotion in the painting?". No one truly knows whether she was happy, sad, angry, or confused. I also represented the idea of confusion with the emotions of the two figures on both sides of the room.

Background

Graphite on paper

27.94 x 35.56 cm

In “background” I attempted a cultural approach as it includes the national animal of India and my family’s country of origin, the tiger. In addition, it also  includes the beaver, representing both the national animal of Canada and the country which I was born in. Both countries play a part in my culture as they influenced the person I am today. To display my personality, I included the woodpecker, which is the animal for my zodiac sign as cancer.

Affection

May 2021

Acrylic paint on Canvas

30.48 x 40.64 cm

The meaning of this artwork is that no matter the colour of your skin, your race, where you come from, or your background, everyone should be loved for who they are, as it shows within this painting the heart that represents love is breaking the border between the distinctly opposite colors of black and white on the canvas. This is also represented by the word affection at the top, as it displays the overall message of the artwork and displays the message of love throughout differences.

Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon Watching from the Darkness

October 2021

Acrylic paint on canvas

30.48 x 40.64 cm

This painting represents that while the hand is excluded, it cannot feel any happiness. This displays a personal connection. When I was young, I was left out and excluded from activities and games that other kids got to play. At the time, I didn’t know why, however as I aged, I realized that I was a shy kid, and didn’t talk to many others which caused them to dislike me. When you are young and this happens, all you can feel is sadness, and cannot feel any happiness.

Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon

November 2021

Graphite on paper

36.83 x 35.56 cm

The meaning of this painting is supposed to display how no matter the tough times that you are going through, you should always try your hardest, and overcome your fears. I displayed the effect of the basketball with fire, symbolizing the momentum that I am dunking with. This further symbolizes the amount of effort I am investing to overcome these obstacles. The hands at the bottom of the paper display one of the obstacles, as it appears that they are trying to reach for me and pull me down.

Open Minded

March 2022

Acrylic paint on canvas

30.48 x 40.64 cm

The meaning of this artwork is to be open-minded about life. It is supposed to represent that when you are interacting with others, you should be willing to consider other people's ideas and thoughts even if they are different from your own. It also means to be unprejudiced, and not being stubborn by thinking your way is always correct. Sometimes the help that you don’t want is the exact help that you need.
